Which court will hear a civil case?

In Mississippi, the court depends on the kind of case and the amount in dispute:

  • Justice court handles small civil claims and evictions.
  • County court (in counties that have one, including Hinds, Rankin and Madison) and circuit court hear larger lawsuits such as injury and contract cases.
  • Chancery court hears divorce, custody, estates, guardianships, land-title disputes and requests for injunctions.
  • Federal court (the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi, Northern Division, at 501 E. Court Street in Jackson) hears certain cases, such as claims under federal law.
