Litigation status (updated September 2026): The federal Xarelto multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2592, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana) has ended. In March 2019 the parties announced a $775 million settlement program, and the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation lists the MDL as terminated on February 11, 2026. There is no longer an open MDL or group settlement to join. Any individual claim depends on its own facts and on the statute of limitations.

What is Xarelto?

Xarelto or Rivaroxaban is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevents the formation of blood clots. It is normally used to treat atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the leg), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung), or used after a knee replacement or hip replacement surgery.

For its first several years on the market Xarelto had no approved reversal agent, which made serious bleeding harder to control. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved andexanet alfa (Andexxa) as a reversal agent for rivaroxaban and apixaban in May 2018.

What are the side effects of Xarelto?

Xarelto causes bleeding.

Bleeding out may occur internally causing stroke, hemorrhaging, or hematoma.

For many individuals the blood loss is uncontrollable requiring one or multiple blood transfusions. Other individuals have required hospitalization because of the bleeding. These individuals go through many tests to figure out the cause of the bleeding.

Many individuals don’t notice the blood loss but feel weak and tired. After seeing a doctor and having blood tests, the doctor determines that their hemoglobin levels are low.

What are your legal rights?

Because the national Xarelto litigation has ended, there is no longer a group settlement to join. If you or a loved one has taken Xarelto and suffered a stroke, hemorrhaging, hematoma, or severe bleeding and you have questions about your situation, you are welcome to call (601) 355-9600 to schedule a consultation. Whether any claim is still possible depends on the facts, including the time limits that apply.
