Litigation status (updated September 2026): The federal Pradaxa multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2385, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois) has ended. On May 28, 2014, the manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim, announced a $650 million settlement to resolve about 4,000 Pradaxa claims in federal and state courts, and the MDL is not on the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation’s list of pending MDLs. There is no open MDL or group settlement to join. Any individual claim depends on its own facts and on the statute of limitations.

What is Pradaxa?

Pradaxa or Dabigatran is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevent the formation of blood clots. It is normally used to treat atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the leg), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung), or used after a knee replacement or hip replacement surgery.

In October 2015 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Praxbind (idarucizumab), a medicine that reverses the blood-thinning effect of Pradaxa in certain emergency situations.

What are the side effects of Pradaxa?

Pradaxa causes bleeding.

Bleeding out may occur internally causing stroke, hemorrhaging, or hematoma.

For many individuals the blood loss is uncontrollable requiring on or multiple blood transfusions. Other individuals have required hospitalization because of the bleeding. These individuals go through many tests to figure out the cause of the bleeding.

Many individuals don’t notice the blood loss but feel weak and tired. After seeing a doctor and having blood tests, the doctor determines that their hemoglobin levels are low.

What are your legal rights?

Because the national Pradaxa litigation has ended, there is no longer a group settlement to join. If you or a loved one has taken Pradaxa and suffered a stroke, hemorrhaging, hematoma, or severe bleeding and you have questions about your situation, you are welcome to call (601) 355-9600 to schedule a consultation. Whether any claim is still possible depends on the facts, including the time limits that apply.
