How boundary disputes are resolved
Many boundary disputes start with a new survey, a new fence, or a sale of neighboring property. The first steps are usually to collect the deeds, plats and surveys for both properties and, if needed, to get a new survey. Some disputes can be settled by agreement and a recorded boundary-line agreement or deed. Others require a lawsuit in chancery court to confirm title or quiet title.
Boundary disputes can also involve adverse possession, which in Mississippi requires ten years of actual, uninterrupted possession (Miss. Code Ann. § 15-1-13). See our adverse possession page.
