A foreign judgment is a judgment rendered by a court outside the state of Mississippi. There are times when you need to enforce that judgment in Mississippi. There are particular acts that apply to enforcement of child custody and child support. These are laws with specific provisions and each case must be applied factually to those laws. The Uniform Enforcement of Foreign Judgments Act would normally apply to other kinds of judgments. A foreign judgment must be enrolled in the appropriate county in Mississippi and other steps must be taken in order for Mississippi to recognize the judgment’s validity. At the Law Offices of John R. Reeves, PC, we have handled many foreign judgment actions in Mississippi. We can help you advance your case.

Enforcing an out-of-state judgment in Mississippi

A judgment from another state’s court is not automatically collectible in Mississippi. It generally must first be enrolled (domesticated) in a Mississippi court, after which it can be enforced like a Mississippi judgment, for example through garnishment or a lien on real property. The person who owes the judgment usually gets notice and a chance to raise limited defenses.

The law offices of john r. reeves, pc helps judgment creditors enroll and collect foreign judgments in Hinds, Rankin, Madison and other Mississippi counties, and can also advise people who have had an out-of-state judgment filed against them.
